Mr. Mette died of cancer Friday in his Scottsdale area home on the Southwest Side.
He was head football coach at Lindblom for 11 years after serving a number of years as assistant there. In 1981, he left coaching at the South Side school, which once took second place in the city, but he remained on the faculty as head of the physical education department.

Mr. Mette returned briefly to football in 1986 and again in 1987 as defensive coordinator under Tom Harold, former Tilden coach, at Northeastern Illinois University. In August of the 1993, he retired from the Chicago Board of Education.
A lifelong Chicagoan, he attended Kelly High, where he was captain of the football team and a defensive lineman. He received an athletic scholarship to the University of Denver, where he earned his degree in physical education.
Mr. Mette taught grade school briefly in Dolton. In 1963, he joined Lindblom and taught swimming.
He leaves his wife, Patricia, a teacher with the Argo-Summit School District; three sons, John VI, Thomas and Kenneth; a daughter, Janie Nichols; his mother, Ethel, and three grandchildren.
