Great (x3) grandfather of Richard Perry Radcliffe. By a deed of March 29, 1802, Joseph Radcliff (Ratcliff) purchased 496 acres in Frederick County, MD. A will dated March 7, 1814 was filed in same court house. Joseph died sometime before Feb. 16, 1816.

In his will he bequeathed to his wife and heirs forever 700 lbs. current money of Md., also confirmed unto her the gift of all those negroes then living which were conveyed in trust to his son Thomas Radcliffe on the 13th day of Nov., 1811 as her estate ..., also two cows and calves, and one of his best steers, 4 ewes and lambs, 2 of his feather beds, and their furniture, 20 barrels of Indian corn, 30 bu. of rye, 500 lbs. of bacon and 20 lbs of hogs lard, 15 lbs. of hackled flax, one flax wheel and his clock reel, 6 cups and saucers, 6 knives and forks and two iron pots.

The first record in the U.S. we have of our current branch of the family begins with this man. A record of his purchase of land in Anne Arundel County, Md. was found in the court house in Frederick, MD. He bought land on Bush Creek, near Monrovia, Md., which is about 6 miles from Frederick, MD. He was the executor of his father's estate. Of him, according to Grace Evans (family historian), he (presumably Joseph) was surety on Wm. chapman's estate. 27 June 1709." Also, "His inventory was filed 9 Sept. 1734." (In reference to Mullenix Radcliff's estate. Other records found in Annapolis say, "Joseph Ratcliffe-Ratcliffe's Chance, part of Hudson's Disappointment. 50 acres, Rent Roll No. 2, St. Mary's and Charles, from Archibald Philpot, 2 Feb. 1747." "Joseph Radcliff took the oath of Fidelity in 1778 in Durham Parish, Charles Co., Md." "5-5-1788 he was elected vestryman of Durham Parish." His subscription of 50 lbs. of tobacco per poll was made in 1781, 1782, 1783, also in 1790. In 1792, Joseph Radcliff, Jr. is in the list of subscribers to the vestry.
The Marriage Record of St. Paul's Parish Register, Baltimore-town, gives the following: "Joseph Radcliff married Mary Lloyd. 3-6-1798."
His will is recorded in the Court house in Frederick, MD as are the land records. Deed for land dated 3-29-1802. Another dated 3-29-1802 for a different tract. Available through Ancestry.com.
