From fellow geneaologist Brooks Wrampelmeier, Washington, D.C.:

"...The earliest documentary reference to him (Mullinex Ratliff) is an indenture made 23 Feb. 1666 by which Francis Pennington of St. Inagoss Manor, St. Mary's County, MD, leased to Emanuell Ratcliff, his wife Anne, and his son Mullenex during their lifetimes a 500-acre parcel of land lying on the south side of Por[t] tobacco Creek 'beginning at the swamp just about the old dwelling house and from there a direct line drawn to [Goose?] Creek' for rent of 1200 lbs. tobacco and two capons or three full hams to be paid annually on December 15.' This property is now in Charles County, MD. {Source: Charles County Land Records, Liber P, No. 1 1688-89, pp 181-82, on FHL microfilm 13,749. Note that while the document is dated in 1666 it was filed among documents for 1689.}
Cattle marks of Emanuel and Mullinex Ratcliff were registered in Charles County between 1686 and 1688. {Source: Liber N, p. 204, in Abstracts of Charles County Circuit Court and Land Records 1665-1695, comp by Elise Greenup (Westminster, MD: Family Line Publications 1994) vol. 2}
