  • Marriage: Elizabeth R. Berry

bullet  General Notes:

According to a letter from Sally Packard to R.P. Radcliffe prior to 7-2002, she writes that there was a suspicion that Kate inherited Uncle Jim's money and it got passed to Paul Vincent. There were long conversations about that incident.

"My name is James G. Berry IV. Dr. James G. Berry, brother of Molly (Berry) Greathead was my great grand father. My grand father James G. Berry Jr. moved to Birchwood, Wisconsin around 1905-06. He had four sons, Gordon, James III (my father), Herbert, Lyle and Erwin. Dr. James G. Berry had a summer cottage on the Berry farm in Birchwood and traveled to Birchwood to birth each of his grandsons. His sister Elizabeth and her husband W.W. Vincent also built a summer home on part of that farm in 1929. His brother Dr. Herbert Berry also spent time there. -- from an email from James G. Berry IV dated 12-12-2008. I believe he meant to say, "His Daughter Elizabeth and her husband..."

From an email dated 12-14-2008, James G. Berry IV -- "My grandfather James was more or less exiled to Birchwood in 1906 because he was uncontrollable in Chicago. Too much carousing, drinking and gambling. He was the reprobate. James Sr. took him to Birchwood bought a section of land on which was the remnants of a lumber camp and told him to stay there and learn to farm. He never did learn to farm and depended on his four sons to do all the work. James Sr. must have paid to build the farmhouse, garage, ice house and barn and sheds. He had to have put money into the farm for a number of years. That may have been why he seemed was so stern. He was probably always upset with his son James II. I was there many summers and the house never had indoor plumbing or central heat. There was electricity in the later years. Had to have been quite a change from Chicago. The land was poor and bought cheap. No good for planting. Best use was probably for sheep but he ran dairy cows until 1950 when the farm was sold and James II and Mable moved to Birchwood. WW Vincent and Elizabeth built a very nice lodge with barn, caretaker cottage and boat house and tennis court on a piece they bought from James II in 1929. (Actually what they paid for the land probably went to pay off debt on the farm) The land parcel has a very nice lake. My father was the caretaker there the first couple of years. The Vincent's had two children Billy and Betty Jane, who was a horsewoman so there were horses there. The farm house is still there and the Vincent lodge is now owned by Illinois people. My Dad told me the cost of the buildings was $90,000 in 1929. I was in Birchwood in September to bury my Mother and visited the lodge which is still a very nice place. I met Billy Vincent (son of WW) several times in the later 1940's and spent a weekend at his home in Chicago. I believe also in Hyde Park and also with numerous servants. Billy also had a son named William who would have been born around 1942-43. Billy ran a roofing company in Chicago and Florida."
